How do I cite a source quoted in another source?Last Updated: Jul 02, 2025 Views: 2
A source quoted in another source is often called a secondary source or an indirect source. In general, it's a good idea to use these sparingly and track down the original primary source to get the quote in its context. However, if that isn't possible, you can reference the original text while citing the secondary source.
APA
In text
Mention the primary work and include the secondary work in paretheses with "as cited in" before it. This tells your readers that they can find the citation under the secondary source (the one you have in hand), but that the original concept is from the primary source (the older one that you don't have). There are more examples on the APA website.
Full Reference entry
Create one entry for the secondary source (the newer one you have in hand). Do not create an entry or mention the original, primary work on the References page.
MLA
In text
Mention the primary work in the body of the paragraph and include the secondary work in paretheses with "qtd. in" before it. This tells your readers that they can find the citation under the secondary source (the one you have in hand), but that the original concept is from the primary source (the older one that you don't have).
