How do I cite a source quoted in another source?

A source quoted in another source is often called a secondary source or an indirect source. In general, it's a good idea to use these sparingly and track down the original primary source to get the quote in its context. However, if that isn't possible, you can reference the original text while citing the secondary source.

APA

Mention the primary work and include the secondary work in paretheses with "as cited in" before it. This tells your readers that they can find the citation under the secondary source (the one you have in hand), but that the original concept is from the primary source (the older one that you don't have). Full Reference entry

Create one entry for the secondary source (the newer one you have in hand). Do not create an entry or mention the original, primary work on the References page.

MLA
