How do I cite course material from Canvas?

First of all, you will want to determine which citation style you are using (APA, MLA, etc.).

Next, you will want to determine if you are accessing a link or embedded resource from an outside creator, such as a video or article. If so, you will want to format your citation to match those containers. You do not need to include information about your course. For more information on creating these citations, check out our library guides on APA Citations and MLA Citations.

If your resource was homegrown by your instructor or the college, you will want to include that information in your citation. There isn't an official format for citing class materials, but if you are citing a page or item that your instructor has created in your course shell in Canvas and they have not provided guidance on how they want this information cited, you can create a citation that looks something like this:

APA

Cornett, J. (2020). APA overview & resources. [Lecture notes]. Canvas at Cerro Coso Community College. https://kccd.instructure.com/login/canvas

In APA, you would include the author/instructor's name, the date of publication (if unavailable, use n.d.), the name of the page, the format in square brackets, the learning management system (Canvas, in our case), the college, and the general Canvas login link. Since people who not registered for the class will not be able to access the material in the course, you don't need to provide the link to the specific page, unless your instructor wants you to include it.

MLA

Cornett, Julie. "Week 8: Copyright." Introduction to Library Research and Bibliography: LIBR C100, Cerro Coso Community College, 10 Oct. 2016, Canvas. Class lecture. Accessed 4 Jan. 2017.

In MLA, you would include the author/instructor's name, the name of the page in quotation marks, the course name, the school, the date the page was published (if available), the learning management system (in our case, Canvas), and the format. You will also include the date accessed, since this is a resource that may change.

When in doubt, ask your instructor how they would like you to format course material citations!
